Costume Analysis of Past!HPS by mieame
#CloakroomFest - Day 5 - Robes/Cloaks/Armor
First of all, I want to be clear that I'm not, in any way, specialized in Asian clothing. This thread is the result of some research that I did, not truly deep, though, for my Xiao Wei doll's clothes.
Also, we have to understand that the show portrays a fantasy world, so it is not bound to follow any specific era or style, and there's no need to be historically accurate in any way.
This was originally going to be a long post for the Clothes-Off in favor of my beloved Past!HPS costume, but decided to save it for the GCF instead. So, here's my interpretation of the different pieces that conform Past!HPS's costume.
This said, please, enjoy my little Costume Analysis of Past!HPS.
Let's start taking this outfit apart, shall we?
The very first layer, just above the skin, is a set of green mandarin collar long-sleeved shirt, black trousers, and black boots.
The second layer is the black translucent robe also with a mandarin collar, buttoned all the way down to the bellybutton. Here, I had been having trouble defining if the ankle-length "skirt" part of it is attached or not to the upper half.
After some research, I found this Mongol-style clothing that has a square extension to the right, and I'm pretty sure that is the shape that the outer robe has. It also has straight full-length sleeves.
The third layer is a long sleeveless outer robe with a hood, double-trimmed all around the front with a cream-colored yarn with dark stripes.
This piece tightly holds to SW's body with a pair of fabric strips attached to the base of the hood, that crosses over his chest going to the back and coming back to the front once again around his waist to be secured in a tight knot at the center of it.
The accessories that complement the outfit are: Embroidered handguards that button at the wrists to help maintain the sleeves in place and protect the hands.
A black leather waistband with a thick stitch all around, that serves the way of a Sam Browne belt to hold the leather armor in place and it's secured in place above the third layer robe with a thinner belt buckled up by a metallic oval piece.
The last layer is a black hoodless cloak secured to the outfit again by two strips of fabric going under one of the leather belts that go over SW's chest, then under his arms and presumably ties at the center of his back.
